The Uses of Ground Penetrating Radar

Before we can get into the many uses for ground penetrating radar (also known as GPR), you must first understand what it is. Ground Penetrating Radar is a machine that allows for subsurface object detection, where the naked human eye can’t see. This tool sends high-frequency sound waves through many different kinds of materials, including concrete or wood. The sound waves return carrying information about the conditions underground.

Why Would I Need Ground Penetrating Radar Services?

There are many alternatives to using ground penetrating radar equipment, however. These options include:

1. Looking at older maps, schematics, or blueprints to locate underground pipelines.

This system is not as reliable as it seems, and it really doesn't seem too reliable to begin with! If any changes have been made, chances are those changes weren't updated on the original blueprints. Relying on this paperwork is about as trustworthy as taking a wild guess… and it can be very dangerous to start digging around randomly. (Not to mention costly, and time consuming!)

2. What about X-ray equipment?

It's true that x-ray equipment was widely used in the past to locate subsurface objects. But this system is outdated, and for good reason! To be effective, one would need to take an x-ray from the bottom as well as the top of the surface.

3. Aren't there other options for locating subsurface material?

Of course! There's always the option to use cameras or other equipment. Or drilling, which can be dangerous, costly, and extremely wasteful.

When it comes down to it, ground penetrating radar is the most cost effective, least disruptive, and the smartest solution for detecting underground items. That includes pipelines.

Ground Penetrating Radar Uses

Ground penetrating radar is used commercially, residentially, and industrially. The purpose served (locating and identifying subsurface materials) is commonly used for detecting pipelines, but can also be used for many other reasons. The equipment, however, can be rather costly to purchase for an occasional need.

It's much more cost effective to hire professional ground penetrating radar services, in which case a trained and experienced technician can gather the needed data and provide the necessary information necessary to continue with your plans.
